I recommend starting with your local NPR station I would start with listening to All Songs Considered or downloading their podcast. It will give you exposure to a wide variety of good music, some of which you'll probably enjoy and some you won't. But it will broaden your horizons and give you intelligent discussion about the music and artists as well as interviews with artists, something you won't find on the the local pop station. NPR also has some great shows about specific genres which will vary by your local station. Another favorite is KCRW's music. KCRW is a public radio station in Los Angeles but they stream over the net so you can listen anywhere. They have some great music shows, one my favorites is Sounds Eclectic. Sounds Eclectic also has a song of the day podcast and a podcast of their show which features in studio sessions with artists from all over the world. Ultimately, what makes music good is entirely subjective. I'm not elitist about the music nor am I "musical" enough to tell if the music is technically good...I care about whether the music moves me. Good music should make me happy, sad, joyful, tearful...it should make me laugh and sometimes cry.

OK, I’ll bite.

Your music-listening habits (“I find some music I like (which is just about everything I hear), I download it, and I listen to it.”) are the same as mine and pretty much everyone else I know.

How about this: instead of looking for stuff you like, try finding something you *don’t* like and then figure out why you don’t like it. I think it’s always a good idea to push at the edges of what you’re comfortable with, especially when it comes to music…
